Which Mudroom Hall Tree Bench Size Is Actually Right for Your Entryway?

If you've spent any time on our site, you've probably had the same moment every one of our customers has: you fall in love with a bench in a photo, and then you freeze. Will it fit? Is 48 inches enough for a family of four, or should you go bigger? Is the 90" too much bench for a normal-sized entryway? What if you measure wrong and end up with $2,600 worth of beautiful reclaimed wood that won't fit past your front door?

Start with the question that actually matters

Not "how big is my entryway." Start with: how many people, coats, and pairs of boots pass through that door every single day? The bench needs to hold your life, not just fit your wall. A retired couple in a beach house has a very different Tuesday than a family of five coming in from ski practice, and the right bench for each of them looks different.

Here's the lineup, smallest to largest, and who each one is really built for.

Settle Entranceway Bench — 43"W × 21"D × 72"H

The smallest piece in the collection, and often the most underestimated. No open cubby row up top — just cast iron hooks and a lidded bench seat that opens for storage. This is the bench for a narrow entry, an apartment foyer, a camp or cottage with limited wall space, or anyone who wants the character of reclaimed barn wood without committing a whole wall to it. One or two people, a handful of coats, boots tucked inside the seat. Simple, honest, and it still stops people in their tracks.

This is the one that started it all, and it's still our most popular size for a reason. Four open top cubbies, five wrought iron triple hooks (that's 15 hanging spots), and four double cubbies underneath for shoes and boots. Nothing hidden, nothing to fuss with — you see it, you grab it, you go. A great fit for a couple, a smaller family, or a mudroom where everyone's in a hurry and doesn't want to deal with a door.

Same footprint as the open version, same 82" of presence, but with a single door that lets you tuck away the stuff you don't want on display — the umbrella nobody claims, the mismatched gloves, the dog leash collection. If you like a tidier look at the door but don't have room to go wider, this is your answer.

72" Mudroom Organizer — 72"W × 20"D × 82"H

This is where things start to really work for a busy household. A single door, a wider open section, six upper cubbies, a full hook rail, and lower cubbies for shoes. Families with kids, multiple coats per person, sports equipment migrating through the door daily — this size gives everyone their own spot instead of fighting over hooks.

The largest and most elaborate piece we build. Two doors flanking a wide open center, the most hooks, the most lower cubbies. This is the bench for a large or blended family, a ranch entry, a ski chalet mudroom, a beach house that fills up with guests every weekend, or any household where "everyone's stuff, all in one place" is the whole point. It doesn't just organize an entryway — it anchors one.

How to actually measure (the part people skip)

Grab a tape measure and give yourself five honest minutes:

Width first. Measure your wall space wall-to-wall, then subtract at least 4–6 inches so the bench doesn't crowd a doorway, light switch, or trim. If you're between two sizes, we almost always tell people to size up — a bench that's slightly too narrow for your life gets outgrown fast; one with a little breathing room doesn't.

Depth second. Every bench in the collection is 20–21" deep. Make sure that doesn't clip a door swing or narrow a hallway you walk through daily.

Height last, and don't skip it. All four larger benches stand 82" — that's real presence, more armoire than side table. Check your ceiling height if you're working with a sloped mudroom roof or a smaller foyer, and picture it against your own door frame for scale.

The part that isn't about measuring at all

Here's what I've learned after 35 years of doing this: nobody ever calls us back disappointed that their bench is "too well built." The sizing question people agonize over is almost always solvable with a tape measure and five honest minutes. What actually matters is picking a bench that's going to hold up to real life — coats, boots, dogs, kids, decades — and still look better in ten years than it does the day it arrives.

So measure carefully, size up if you're torn, and call me if you get stuck. I'd much rather spend ten minutes on the phone getting it right than have you guess.

Your 5-minute measuring checklist

Before you order, run through these:

• Measure your wall space wall-to-wall. Get the full width you have to work with before anything else.
• Subtract 4–6 inches for clearance. Leave room around doorways, light switches, and trim so the bench doesn't crowd them.
• Check depth against door swings and hallways. Every bench is 20–21" deep — make sure that doesn't clip a door or narrow a walkway.
• Check height against your ceiling and door frame. The larger benches stand a full 82" — picture that against your own entryway for scale.
